ELA Summer Reading Requirements

Dear Parent or Guardian,

As the 2016-17 school year draws to a close, it is a pleasure to present to you our 7th & 8th Grade suggested summer reading list for Summer 2017. Summer reading is an important activity for your child’s intellectual growth and development. It encourages students to continue learning while still providing them with fun and enjoyment. What helps make reading entertaining for children is allowing them the freedom to choose books that speak to their unique interests. The attached list was created with the assistance of the Teaching & Learning Department in collaboration with your child’s upcoming ELA teachers. This is a list of books that we think your child may enjoy. It also represents some of the best literature being read by adolescents today. Many of these books are award winning titles!

Students may choose a book or books from this list to read. Please refer to the attached handout on questions to use in conversations with your child in order to help them increase their comprehension of what they are reading. All ELA classes for the 2017-18 school year will be referencing excerpts from these readings in their first unit of study. Students who need assistance in obtaining a copy of these books can visit the Huntsville Public Library. These titles can also be found on Amazon, through e-reader downloads, and possibly even at Half Price Books.

This year we are also including an opportunity to participate in a Summer Reading Camp through NEWSELA. This is a free opportunity to choose a reading club or clubs and NEWSELA will send your child two articles a week. Information regarding NEWSELA Summer Reading Camps can be found at We hope that you will partner with us in order to provide your child with this opportunity to continue their learning and grow their love for reading.

Enjoy the summer!
